Clothing and apparel Closeouts

Clothing closeouts can be an opportunity for companies to donate much-needed apparel items to those in need. Clothes are not just a luxury; having clothes to wear is as basic a human right as having food to eat or air to breathe. Yet, amazingly, millions of people still die every year in major urban centers from exposure to cold in the winters.

Why Clothing Closeouts Matter What better use could a company make of clothing closeouts than by protecting their fellow human beings from the dangers of the elements? Individuals donate bags of clothes to charities every day, yet many companies auction their overstock apparel merchandise off to the highest bidder, where the clothing winds up on sale in discount stores and flea markets. This does help keep poor people from freezing to death, but not the utterly destitute. It also just results in possibly more boxes of unused, unwanted clothes gathering dust in boxes rather than being worn by those who could genuinely use them.

It's also better business practice for companies to donate the merchandise of clothing closeouts to charity from a financial standpoint. Clothing, after all, is one of the cheapest types of merchandise to produce, and it's also easy to replace and always in demand. On a more pragmatic level, clothing closeouts donated to charity also makes sense taxwise.

Corporations that donate inventory to charitable organizations become eligible for additional tax benefits. The deduction for inventory contributions is resolved as the sum of the donor's tax basis in the merchandise plus a half of the difference between the inventory tax basis and its fair market value. But such considerations should be ancillary in the grand schematics; giving clothing to the needy shouldn't be done because it's profitable but because it's the right thing to do!
